Well I know the coliseum was ruined by an earthquake but what happened to the floor? It was sand and in pictures of it know it has rocks and rock slabs everywhere. So, what happened? Thanks.

the 1st answerer may indeed b correct, but this site states the floor was made of wood. makes one wonder how they filled it with water, but romans were very ingenious.

Function
The Coliseum was built primarily to entertain the people of Rome. Admission was free. Games included battles among gladiators, animals and prisoners. At times the arena was filled with water for ship battles.
Architectural Details
The Coliseum was elliptical and had a —wooden floor—, below which were passageways and cages for animals as well as holding cells for slaves and dressing rooms for the gladiators. The structure has three levels of arches supported by columns. The Coliseum was built with stone, tufa, travertine and concrete.
i suppose the wood was either used for different projects, or eventually rotted away.

ADDED–Below the wooden arena floor, there was a complex set of rooms and passageways for wild beasts and other provisions for staging the spectacles.
