Chosen Answer:
It is very bad. I live in Mirandola where there is substantial damage. Several buildings have collapsed. No one is staying in houses and telephones are hit and miss. Hopefully, your family is okay; not hearing does not mean much right now. People are living in tents or sleeping in cars and don’t necessarily have access to communications immediately. I spent the night last night sleeping in a car in a field on a farm north of Mirandola.
Edit: sorry I cut the original answer a little short. I had to move to another location, but there is an outdoor power point here. Some of the destroyed buildings, such as the San Francesco church and the Duomo here in Mirandola, had been damaged during the last earthquake and were off limits to everyone other than the workers who were trying to stabilize them. You need to realize that the pictures you see on the internet are the worst of the conditions here. However, not everything was damaged that badly and most people are okay. The Civil Protection people were already in place here from the previous earthquake. Further, people here are working together to clean up and check for damage. People are looking out for each other. Where I was last night we had 8 adults and 4 children sleeping in tents and cars away from the farm buildings and we had a cook out. In my neighborhood, people had put up tables and chairs along the street with portable grills to cook. There is at least one grocery in the area that is up and running. People who are in the tent cities are being fed by the civil protection people. Where I was yesterday afternoon while trying to make arrangements for the night, they were serving pasta, salad, oranges and drinks to people who have been sleeping in their own tents and cars in small parks. The chances are that your family will be okay even if not able to communicate immediately.
