I am doing an assessment on the leaning tower of Pisa in geography and need to know what social, environmental problems there are for the tower anything will be appreciated not just about how it leans -thanks
Chosen Answer:
Pigeons! After work on the foundations it now only leans by 40 cm.
After a similarly constructed tower in Pavia, Italy, collapsed in 1989 the bell tower in Pisa was closed to the public. A team of specialists including John Burland a soil mechanics specialist from Imperial College London succeeded in reducing the lean and stabilising the structure. The method is complicated but is described on science.howstuffworks.com
The actions taken by Burland and his team could, theoretically, stabilise the structure permanently. The real threat now comes from the masonry itself, especially the material in the lower stories, where most of the forces caused by the centuries-long leaning have been directed. If any of this masonry crumbled, the tower could collapse. And even a minor earthquake in the region could have devastating consequences.
In spite of these potential problems, engineers expect the famous structure will remain stable for at least another 200 years.
